Photo Talk

Pompey Darkroom are excited to share with you our next event! Our first ever Photo Talk night will bring together three Portsmouth based photographers to each present about their practice. Each talk will be accompanied by a series of images of the photographers work and there will also be the opportunity to ask questions afterwards.

The event is on the 23rd November in the Aspex Portsmouth learning space from 6pm until 8pm and the first talk will kick off at 6:30pm to allow for some informal networking/socialising beforehand.

Maya Brasington

Maya Brasington is a multidisciplinary artist and photographer based in Portsmouth, UK. With a practice centred in exploring themes of identity, memory, and family, Maya’s work looks to question and problematise the integral role photography plays in the formation of identity. Most recently drawing from her relationship to her mixed heritage, Maya’s use of photography and archival imagery seeks to explore notions of third-space, and the inherent liminality in which diasporic identities often find themselves.

Maya is a shortlisted finalist in the Association of Photographers (AOP) Student Awards 2023. She was also a twice selected featured artist in Graduate Photography 2023 Print Edition of Source Magazine.

Olufemi Olaiya

I am a self-taught visual artist, with a specialty in portrait, fashion and architecture photography. Through my lens, I strive to tell stories that transcend time and connect people across generations.

My work is deeply influenced by historical context which explores subject matters that resonate with the human experience and connections.

My primary goal as a visual artist is to capture the essence of my subjects in a profound manner that aims to reveal the unique qualities that make each individual a part of the greater tapestry of humanity. These portraits serve as a basis for meaningful dialogues, sparking conversations that celebrate our shared experiences and values.

Karah Mew

Karah Mew is a working documentary and environmental portrait photographer based in the the south of England, UK. Her work often takes shape through longform series documenting the fleeting mundane of motherhood and family life. Reclaiming the family photo album through her practice, she explores past feelings through reimaging what is no longer, exploring difficulties she experiences on recall and attachment. Essentially it is the importance of how collective memories shape, anchor and link loved ones to spaces and places. "I create real life imagery, with strong oral storytelling themes, drenched in collective memories and I'm just here trying to frantically organise the things I can't hold into some kind of order."
