Turning the Tide is a new public programme opening up the conversation around photography through a series of 10 minute talks.
We’re inviting anyone with an idea to propose a photography-related talk. It could be personal or project-based, explore a theory or idea, or focus on a photographer you admire. You don’t need to be an experienced photographer or artist to take part, but you should feel comfortable speaking to a large audience. First-time nerves are welcome, and we can support you through the process.

Please note, spaces for talks are limited and proposals will be selected based on their relevance and suitability to each event’s theme.
Proposals are ongoing and will be reviewed on a rolling basis. There is no closing date for submissions.

How to Apply
We’re inviting young photographers and emerging creatives aged 11-18 in Portsmouth to submit a photograph for Photo Fringe OPEN26, a photography festival taking place across Portsmouth, Brighton and Newhaven this October.
As part of the Portsmouth programme, selected work will be exhibited at Playland on Commercial Road as part of an exciting group exhibition.
Entry is free and cost of printing will be covered.
Exhibition Opportunity - Photo Fringe Open26
This year’s theme is Feedback Loop. A feedback loop can describe the way people, places, stories and systems influence and change each other. It might be about the conversations between communities and landscapes, stories passed between generations, cycles in nature, the systems that shape our everyday lives, or the way artists and audiences influence each other.
Your photograph could explore a feedback loop in any way you choose. Here are some ideas to get you started:
People + nature: Parks, gardens, city streets meeting green spaces, landscapes or small details. How do humans and nature come together? How do they affect each other?
Memory + generations: Family albums, heirlooms, older relatives, memory tokens, or recreating and reimagining family photographs. How do images keep memories alive across generations?
Cycles + change: Seasonal shifts, decay, regrowth, weather patterns or changes in the landscape. Where do you see nature repeating or recycling itself?
Everyday systems: Local shops, delivery routes, machinery, recycling, waste, urban landscapes or portraits. What hidden loops keep our daily lives running?
These are just starting points. You’re encouraged to interpret Feedback Loop in your own way.
When you submit your photograph, you’ll be asked to write one or two sentences explaining how your image connects to the theme.

The closing date for submissions is 2 October 2026.
The exhibition will open on Monday 26 October 2026 at Playland, Commercial Road, Portsmouth.
Please note, the deadline is firm to allow enough time for the work to be prepared, printed and installed.
